to answer your question about film types it obviously will depend upon the look you are after and whether you want color or B&W
for portraits in natural light situations faster films are often preferred for color fuji nph i have used for weddings and it usually gives a great skin tones and being film gives you great exposure latitude - they now have a series called the Fujicolor Portrait Pro Series - i haven't tried that though - Fuji have a great reputation for color portrait film - so i would give that a try if thats what you are after
for B&W Fuji Neopan 400 or 1600 or the Kodak TMax range 400 3200 - i have used both and like them all - they can all be pushed very easily - i personally love the grain of TMax 3200 and this works very well in low light - looks great with nudes -
but it all depends on what you are look you are after in the shot - but they are my suggestions - good luck
