I have used a 35 mm slr for a number of years and just got a Canon Rebel XT D-SLR that I am quite happy with but it will not focus when I am very close to objects?  I am not sure why...maybe because the lense I bought with it are cheap?  I was able to focus inches away with my 35 mm.

Could someone please explain why this may be happening and how I can fix it

Sincere thank you!

how close do you mean centimeters or meters ? regardless most lenses will not focus particularly close (eg centimeters) it doesn't depend on their cost so much but their build - have a look at the specifications of the lens concerned and it should tell you how close it will focus - to focus closer you may need some close up filters which screw onto the front like a polarizer does or if you want to do it with a bit more quality you can buy a macro lens

I am talking about trying to focus in centimeters.  I have ordered and attachment for the lense and I will see if this will help.  The reason I was so concerned is that my 35mm lense are able to fucus within centimeters from subject so I thought these lenses would.  What brand do you recomend on the less expensive side?

For proper close-up photography you should really get a macro lens. I have just got a 70mm sigma macro which is very reasonably priced and so far the results have been stunning. If you are serious about taking close-ups then there really is no substitute!
