Hi, I'm now on the forum but have been listed within the Travel Sites for a while!
While my site does get a few visitors I don't really get that much feedback - other than family and friends telling me its good (yea, like they're not biased!)
Anyway, it would be much appreciated if some people here could have a look and tell me (honestly) what you think... the web site is http://www.ourscotland.co.uk/
Many thanks in advance... now I am away to check out the rest of this forum!

Hi Bruce
A few observations that I hope will help:
I'd get a designer to work up the header for you. Typing the name large isn't cutting it.
Change the main body font from Times bold to something that works better on screen (Times was invented for printing on paper, Verdana for example, was designed for onscreen reading).
All the animated gifs are damaging the pages - it puts a lot of people off and tends to make sites look like the personal 'homepages' of individuals 8 years ago.
If you do need to have all the various elements on your front page (all the buttons etc) then group them together in one neat block rather than have them scattered about the page.
Move the copyright and email details to the very bottom of the page. At the moment they're in a prime position and probably don't need to be.
If you're going to have a full image as your background, consider changing the colour for links - the blue is lost on several parts of the image. Even better, I'd crop the image top and bottom and just have it running through the centre - this will create a little space for the eye to breathe top and bottom.
I hope this lot helps. If you'd like some more help, then please drop me a line through my site - I work with a small team who just put my product photography site together and who I'm certain would be able to give you some more tips and offer some professional assistance should you need it.
Regards
Gordon

Hi Gordon, thanks for taking the time to look at my site.
To get the site up and running quickly I opted for a simple text format for the header - as you say just using large text doesn't cut it, but its one of those things thats so far down the "to do" list that I never seem to get round to it!
I'll also look at changing the Times font - thats come through from the original format of the site, which was in fact paper based as I was looking at writing a few articles on Scotland rather than creating a site. My "to do" list includes converting the site to use style sheets so I will look at changing the text then.
I'll look through your other comments later and see what needs to be done to address these. In the meantime I really appreciate you taking the time to look and pass on your comments.

My pleasure - it sounds like you're well on your way. I have one of 'those lists' too! It's never ending, however after a few months, it is getting shorter!
I'll be bookmarking your site as I'll be spending a little time around Edinburgh in a couple of months.
Meanwhile, best of luck,
Gordon

I think you could describe my site as a "work in progress" and chances are it will never be finished, though hopefully always improving!
Edinburgh is an amazing place, which is probably why I have so much on my site concerning it (as well as many notes, books, etc that I have for reference). Will you be there for business or more a personal trip? Obviously the castle is a must see (tho a touch expensive to get in to) but on a clear day the views from the esplanade make the climb up the hill worthwhile.
All the best, Bruce

Pleasure, I'm happy to say. A wedding, followed by a stay with family in and around the Edinburgh. Can't wait!

| Sounds good to me - and staying with people locally means you'll get plenty of ideas of places to visit! While there's so much to see and do in Edinburgh itself you really need to get out into the surrounding areas - there's plenty of historic buildings around (castles, abbeys, etc) or hills if walking is what you enjoy (the Pentlands). I'm sure you'll have a great time... just remember to bring some waterproof clothing (tho hopefully you won't need it!)
