Just getting into the photography industry and so much to learn.  Would like to know what software is mandatory for someone like me just getting started.  What software do I use for what necessary tasks?  I've read Photoshop cs is something I must have for starters.  Is this correct.  My major concern is that get the right software first time or I'll end up wasting a lot of time and money not to mention great frustration.  Thanks!

Get a copy of Adobe Elements 2.  They sell on ebay for less than $30.  It will give you an awful lot of power over your pictures.  If you wish to continue later, you will already know what program you want to buy.  Good Luck

There are numerous packages out there and yes Photoshop CS is probably the best and best known - it is expensive though.

Jim suggested Photoshop Elements and yes that is good too - it is often given away with some digital cameras or at least earlier versions are so it can be obtained at a better price through upgrade to the new version - so keep an eye out for that.

other recommendations are Digital Light and Color's Picture Window Pro http://www.dl-c.com/Temp/

also check out Jasc (now Corel) Paint Shop Pro http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel3/Products/Display&pfid=1047024307383

- i have seen some excellent manipulations on Photography-Gallery by silvijo http://www.photography-gallery.com/gallery/showpic.php?pid=1445&aid=195&uuid=184

perhaps the thing to learn about is the concept of work-flow and and how to deal with your images and imaging system via monitor calibration, appropriate use of color space, printer calibration etc check out

http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ and http://www.normankoren.com/ both of which have excellent tutorials on such things.

and you thought computers made things easy :)

Hi Greg,

I have used Roxio 6 and found it invaded other programs making them not usable. Also, the hard drive locks up with an error linked to Roxio during use. I strongly DO NOT recommend Roxio. The upgrade to 7 was downloaded and made things worse.

Since my horror story with Roxio, I also am searching for photo software. What software did you end up purchasing? Did you like the software? Do you still use it and find it easy to use and maneuver through? My scanner is an HP 5550C and the hard drive is 160 gb with a pentium 4.
