I'm a complete newbie in this department. I was wondering if anyone has advice for someone who'd like to get into catalog photography. I'm starting fresh, so I have no idea what kind of lighting system I should look for and/or what cameras to look into. I'm looking to photograph products such as men's clothing (neckties and such), and obviously I want to make them look as true-to-life as possible. I would be photographing these items on a dummy in a controlled environment.
Is anyone out there familiar with catalog photography? Any insight (including links to tutorials) would be much appreciated.
Maybe I can help. I worked as a photographer for mail order catalog photography most of my life until a few years back .
So experience I have, although equipment changes and depends on availability in different parts of
the world. It also depends on you budget and how profitable your proposed work may be.
I always advise when setting up your studio that you should be really mean with yourself and check out the used photo equipment dept of your nearest pro photo store, until the pennies start rolling in...
It's difficult to condense what I have learnt in a lifetime into a few words, however lets start with my
website at this address: http://www.photorog.com
The website started as a hobby but now has surpassed all expectations and I have been able to help a few people to get started.
Perhaps you may want to make contact directly with me which you can do from the website e-mail
address, write "Photography Sites" in the subject line of e-mail, so it doesn't get lost in the spam...
