Could you tell me what should be included in the package with a canon 100-400mm f4.5 5.6 is lens, such as a carrying case, or any hoods. I have heard that some dealers strip these items from the package and then charge extra for these items.

Nunzio - you should check the canon website as they often list the "contents of the box" - apart from that, with lenses you don't get much - (1) end cap, (2) lens cap, (3) soft bag (sometimes hard) and for that lens i would guess a (4) collar for mounting on a tripod + a small manual in multiple languages.

If you are purchasing online through one of the larger, reputable dealers, their description of the goods will often include a note on "what's included". B&H Photo in New York is one such dealer that works this way. link;
